Weavers, Littlefield and the Men's Golf grab OCAA honours

Weavers, Littlefield and the Men's Golf grab OCAA honours

Lorelle Weavers (Burlington), Evan Littlefield (Thunder Bay) and the Niagara College men's golf team were honoured with special awards from the OCAA.

Weavers and Littlefield were named OCAA athletes of the week while men's golf was named OCAA team of the week.

Weavers is the defending national champion and captured her first provincial title on September 30th when she carded a tournament best +16 (226), winning the championship by four strokes.  In ten career tournaments for Niagara, Weavers has won eight times and finished second twice.  Last season she won three individual tournament championships, a CCAA individual national championship and was name a CCAA All-Canadian.

Weavers' dominance on the links continued over to this season as she won another three tournaments, including her first OCAA championship.  At the conclusion of the tournament, the former Chicago State University Cougar standout was once again named a CCAA All-Canadian, becoming the first student-athlete in Niagara College history to receive the honour twice.

The men's golf team won their first OCAA golf medal since 1975 by squeezing out a one stroke victory over nine-time defending champion Humber Hawks.  Consisting of Evan Littlefield, Josiah Dixon, Logan Lammerant, Mark Wikkerink, and Zack Bankuti, the Knights collectively shot 866 in 54 holes.

The OCAA championship win sees the men's team move into second place in the CCAA rankings, the highest ever for the program.  In four tournaments this year, the men's team won three, their only loss was a tie for second place at the Georgian Invitational.  On September 21, the Niagara won the Knights invitational by an incredible 15 strokes, the biggest win differential by any program this season.  Wikkerink, Littlefield, and Ben Kenel finished first, second, and third respectively.

The men's golf team wouldn't have been as dominant without fourth-year golfer Evan Littlefield, the first Niagara College men's OCAA individual champion since Matt Hunter in 2007.  The former University of New Mexico Lobo has been outstanding all season long, winning two of four tournaments he played in.  After collecting his gold medals, Littlefield was named a CCAA All-Canadian, becoming the ninth student-athlete in school history to receive the honour.

Lorelle Weavers and all five members of the Niagara College men's golf team will conclude their season at the 2015 CCAA Golf Championship being hosted by the University of the Fraser Valley at the Chilliwack Golf Club from October 13-16th.
