RECAP: Another strong day keeps Knights men near the top entering third round

Another strong day at the Canadian University/College Golf Championship will see the Niagara Knights men's golf team in medal contention during the tournament's second half. The Knights improved upon their first round score by one, firing a cumulative 12-over 300.

Entering round three, the Knights are tied with the University of Fraser Valley Cascades. They are not far from medal contention, sitting seven strokes behind the third place University of Victoria Vikes, and nine behind the second place Queen's University Gaels. The UBC Thunderbirds continued their dominance over the tournament, extending their day one lead by 14. They now hold a 34-stroke lead heading into the tournament's final two days.

Evan Littlefield (Thunder Bay) and Mark Wikkerink (Trenton) was the leader for the Knights during the second round. Littlefield, the defending OCAA Champion fired and even-par 72 and sits in 12th place entering round 3 at plus-1 overall. He sits only four strokes away from medal contention as play begins today. Wikkerink, the Knights highest finisher as the 2015 CCAA Golf Championship, rebounded from a 5-over first round. Wikkerink tallied an eagle on his finishing hole to record an even par 72 for his second round. Josiah Dixon (Bognor) carded a 4-over 76, which is good enough to find him just behind Littlefield in a tie for 13th place. Nick Schepens (London) and Logan Lammerant (Seaforth) rounded out the Knights contingent, shooting 80 and 85 respectively. On the women's side Lorelle Weavers (Burlington) had a tough day, recording a second round 96. Weavers now sits in 33rd place entering round three.

The Knights will look to climb the standings and put themselves into a strong position heading into the tournament's cut-day. Following Thursday's third round, the field will be reduced to the top 10 men's teams and top six women's teams, in addition to any individuals within 15 shots of the lead.
