PREVIEW: Niagara heads to OCAA Championship looking for repeat

The Niagara Knights golf team begins their quest for a repeat today at the OCAA Golf Championship, hosted by Georgian College at National Pines Golf Club. At least year's OCAA Championship the Knights captured the Men's Team Championship, Men's Individual Championship, and Women's Individual Championship.

Paced by Evan Littlefield (Thunder Bay), who won the men's individual gold medal, posting a cumulative 2-under 212 across the event's three rounds. His performance was enough to earn him a nod as a CCAA All-Canadian. He was joined on the podium by teammate Josiah Dixon (Bognor), who shot 218 to capture the provincial Bronze medal. As a team the Knights grinded out a one stroke victory, finishing just ahead of the Humber Hawks, to earn the team gold medal.

Both Littlefield and Dixon are back in the mix this year, and have once again proved themselves to be the leaders. Through a trio of invitational tournament's, either Littlefield or Dixon have led the way for Niagara. Dixon was the Knights low scorer at both the Georgian Invitation, where he captured the silver medal, and the Brock Invitational. Littlefield won the rain-shorted Niagara Knights Fall Classic, shooting three-under through the 12 holes that were recorded.

As a team, the Knights finished on the podium at all three events, getting better each time out. They captured bronze at both the Georgian Invitational and Brock Invitational before capturing gold at the Knights Fall Classic to round out the invitational schedule. Joining Littlefield and Dixon at the championship will be Ben Kenel (Hamilton), Brett Shewchuk (Thunder Bay), and Logan Lammerant (Seaforth). Each day the top four scores out of five will be recorded to produce a cumulative score for the Knights.

On the women's side of the draw, defending OCAA Champion Lorelle Weavers (Burlington) will seek to make her mark for the third consecutive season. In her third year as a Knight, Weavers has put together quite the resume. She has a slew of individual medals, but the earmark accomplishments are a silver medal at the 2014 OCAA Championship, a gold medal at the 2014 CCAA National Championship, and a gold at the 2015 OCAA Championship. Her accomplishments allowed her to become the first ever two-time CCAA All-Canadian in Niagara College history.

Entering the tournament Weavers will need to bring her A game with her to Barrie. With a pair of silver medals to her name through the invitationals, it would be no surprise to see her back on the podium at this year's provincial tournament. She will be in a dog fight with Georgian's Addison Wallwin and Humber's Sheila McKeen, who have also reached the podium on multiple occasions throughout the 2016 OCAA invitational season.

Live any golf tournament, the players who bring their best across three days will be the ones taking home the hardware. The 2016 OCAA Championship will be no different.
