CCAA All-Canadian and OCAA Champion Josiah Dixon (Bognor) continued to ride the hot streak in the first round of the 2016 PING CCAA Golf National Championship at Fox Meadow Golf Course in Stratford, PEI. Dixon recorded a 5-under 67 to kick off the event. With golfers still on the course he is the clubhouse leader, holding a one shot lead over Humber's Conner Watt.
Dixon missed a short putt on the first hole to open the round, but was dominant throughout the next 17 holes. He eagled both par 5s on the front nine for a 3-under 33 at the turn. He added two birdies in the first three holes on the back nine to close out his round at 5-under.
OCAA bronze medallist Evan Littlefield (Thunder Bay) shot an even par 72. It was a rocky start for Littlefield, tallying 3 bogeys on the front nine to sit three over par at the turn. However, he rebounded with three consecutive birdies on the 13th, 14th, and 15th holes to get back to par. He closed out the round with a trio of pars. His performance was good enough to find himself in the top ten, sitting tied for ninth after the day.
As a team the Knights men were 5-over at the conclusion of round one. Ben Kenel (Hamilton), Brett Shewchuk (Thunder Bay), and Logan Lammerant (Seaforth) rounded out the scoring for the Knights carding 75, 79, and 79 respectively. The men sit alone in 4th place, two strokes behind the tournament leading Humber Hawks and Cégep André-Laurendeau.
On the women's side of the draw CCAA All-Canadian and OCAA Champion Lorelle Weavers (Burlington) carded a 6-over 78 in her opening round. Starting on the back nine, Weavers tallied two birdies and three bogeys for a 1-over 37 at the turn. She shot a 41 on her finishing nine to close out the round. She finishes day one in 6th place, 4 strokes back of leader Becky Martin of Medicine Hat College.
