Women’s Basketball Adds Niagara Falls Native Alyssa McCabe

The Niagara College department of Athletics & Recreation is pleased to announce the addition of Alyssa McCabe to the Women’s Basketball Program. McCabe is a graduate of A.N. Meyer Secondary School, has been a member of the Niagara Falls Red Raiders, Niagara JUEL, and most recently the Brock University Badgers.

Niagara College women’s basketball Head Coach Mike Beccaria commented “we are very excited to have Alyssa join Niagara College. She comes from a solid basketball background, she’s athletic, and her fundamental skills are excellent.”

McCabe was named  co-MVP of the 2012 OFSAA Silver Medalist A.N. Meyer Marauders and will enroll in the Niagara College two-year Educational Assistant program. She commented “I chose Niagara because of my academic program. I really want to be an educational assistant and I feel this program gives me the best chance to accomplish that.”

An honour roll student during her high school career, the 19-year old point guard understands the importance of maintaining a strong balance between academics and basketball. “I want to have a high average. That’s my goal, and grades are important to me. I want to be a role model through both school and on the court.”

Considering McCabe’s impressive playing career prior to joining the Knights, Coach Beccaria added “I think Alyssa will have a prominent role moving forward. Because of her experience there is going to be a significant leadership component to what she brings to our program.

When asked about her on court goals during her time at Niagara College, McCabe said “I am definitely setting personal and individual goals for myself, but as a point guard the most important thing is helping the team and my teammates get better.”

McCabe will join a Niagara College women’s basketball program that has had a busy off season. The Knights brought in Mike Becarria as the team’s new head coach, and have added off season talent via the recruitment of Mary Ingribelli and Hayley Tamo.

“The development of the women’s basketball team was very attractive to me” added McCabe. “I know a few girls on the team, and with Coach Beccaria coming in, it just seemed like a perfect fit and a great time for me to join the program.”

The tip-off for the 2013-14 Niagara College women’s basketball season is set for September 27th when the Knights visit the Brock Badgers for the fourth annual Peninsula Hoops Classic charity game. In the more immediate future the Knights will help lead three sections of the annual Niagara Kids’ College summer camp program.
