Men's Basketball Picks Up Win in Season Opener

Oct 23, 2022...WELLAND - The Niagara College men's basketball program picked up their first win of the season this Sunday afternoon in an 80-56 win over the Canadore Panthers at the Welland Campus Centre.

The Panthers suffered their second loss of the weekend after opening their season at Mohawk Saturday night with a 125-75 loss.

Niagara led through the first quarter with a 22-15 lead to keep the Panthers at bay. Both teams kept things pretty even through the second, each grabbing up 15 points before the halftime buzzer with the Knights still sitting just out of reach of Canadore with a 37-30 lead.

The Knights never relinquished control, continuing to lead through the third quarter, and eventually holding Canadore to just 10 points in the fourth to secure the 80-56 win.

" It was nice to get our first win of the regular season,' said head coach Phil Mosley. "We defended well but need to continue to work on our consistency on offence and in transition."

Second-year guard Reggie Williams netted 20 points in the contest, followed by rookie Khayden Stewart with 16 points in his OCAA debut. Veteran Delroy Grandison  chipped in with a double double 11pts and 18 rebounds.

Next up for the Knights will be Saturday, Oct 29th when Sheridan College rolls into Welland for an 8:00pm tip-off.
