PREVIEW: Knights look to take top spot in OCAA west division standings

PREVIEW: Knights look to take top spot in OCAA west division standings

Wednesday, October 11th will see the Niagara Knights men's soccer program (5-1-1, 2nd OCAA West) take on the OCAA west division leading Fanshawe Falcons (5-0-2) at Youngs Sportsplex in Welland. If victorious, the Knights can take sole possession of first in the OCAA west as they currently sit one point behind the Falcons in the standings. The last time these two teams played one another, it resulted in a competitive game that would result in a 1-0 loss for the Knights.

Niagara and Fanshawe not only sit at the top of the west division, they are also the 2nd (Fanshawe) and 3rd (Niagara) ranked teams in the entire OCAA, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated matches of the season thus far.

The Knights, who are undefeated in the last 6 regulation games, will rely on key players such as 3rd year striker Carlos Williams (St. Catharines) and 4th year captain, and athlete of the week, Andrew Currie (Woodstock) to keep the team composed on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. In a game filled with as much emotion as this one, it is important for the Knights to be able to rely on their leaders to help keep them focused.

Both teams can attribute most of their success to strong goalkeeping and shutdown defense, as both teams rank at the top of the OCAA for fewest goals against with Fanshawe at 5 and Niagara at 6. Fanshawe has shown throughout this season that scoring goals against their team is difficult, therefore to be successful Wednesday night,  the Knights must generate, and capitalize, on any scoring chance they get.

Kick-off for Wednesday night's game between the two OCAA West Division giants is set for 6:00pm.
