NEWS: Knights well represented at OCAA Awards Banquet

Wednesday, October 25th saw the Ontario College Athletic Association hand out the year end awards to the best collegiate men's soccer players in Ontario prior to the start of the 2017 OCAA Championship being hosted by Fleming College in Peterborough.

The OCAA No. 4 and CCAA No. 15 ranked Niagara Knights were well represented with four league all-star selections in Jordi Amores, Carlos Williams, Andrew Currie, and Same Robson, while Currie was also named West Division defensive player of the year.

"We are extremely proud of our veteran all-stars this season" said Niagara College director of athletics and recreation Matthew Davies. "They are leaders for our program played key roles in helping lift our men's soccer program to their winningest regular season in in team history. We look forward to watching the entire team perform at the OCAA Championship this week."

This marks the third OCAA all-star selection for Amores. The Niagara Falls native and Holy Cross graduate is a driving force behind the Knights' offensive attack. From his midfield position, Amores takes over games with his ability to maintain possession through defensive tackles, and use his spectacular footwork to set up Niagara scring chances. Amores was also named an all star in 2013 and 2014.

This marks the second all-star selection for Williams. The St. Catharines native and Governor Simcoe graduate led the Knights in scoring this season with six goals in 10 games. The third year striker rejoined the Knights in September after a two year hiatus, and his dominant offensive performance this season saw him move into first place on the Knights' all-time career scoring list with 15 goals.

For Robson this marks the first all-star selection for the Milton native. From his goalkeeper position, Robson was outstanding for the Knights this season. Robson finished third in the OCAA in save percentage with a .917, turning aside 33 saves while allowing just three goals against.

Currie, the Knights veteran team captain served as the anchor of the Knights defensive back four. Game-in-and-game-out, the Woodstock native provided the Knights with lockdown defense against opponents' top offensive threats. This marks the first all-star selection for Currie and the first ever defensive player of the year award given to a member of Niagara College men's soccer.

The Knights are making their third straight appearance at the OCAA Championship. They will open the 2017 tournament in a rematch of last year's bronze medal match against the George Brown Huskies. Kick off is set for 12:00pm on Thursday at Fleming College, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals against either Durham or Fanshawe, while the losing team will be eliminated from medal contention.
