RECAP: Knights fall to Hawks in OCAA bronze medal match

Saturday October 28th saw Niagara Knights fall to the Humber Hawks 1-0 in their bronze medal match at the OCAA championships. The defeat puts an end to the Knights’ 2017-18 soccer season.

In a matchup that saw both goalkeepers play extremely well, it was Humber’s 40th minute tally off a free kick that proved to be the lone goal of the match.  “I thought we played very well today, “said Knights’ head coach Frank DeChellis. “Humber knew they had to respect us or it would have cost them dearly.  The game was end to end and both keepers were forced to shine over 90 minutes. We used the entire field effectively today and never allowed ourselves to get into a situation that we couldn’t get out of.  Much to our dismay, Humber’s keeper had a good game."

Knights’ keeper Sam Robson (Milton, Ont.) was outstanding once again, recording 16 saves in his OCAA career finale. “We were worried about their disposition after a crushing loss Friday, but our goalkeeper Sam Robson was the team whip today in his career finale.  He led the guys through his attitude and actions while playing one of his best games as a Knight,” said DeChellis.

After the game, Knights goalkeeper Sam Robson was disappointed with the result, but was proud of his team’s showing. “The boys played a great game. The back line was solid as usual and the midfield was moving the ball well today. We just couldn't capitalize on our chances. But that is soccer and I couldn't be more proud of our team today."

Looking back on the 2017-18 soccer season, coach DeChellis was extremely proud of how his players handled themselves throughout the year. “We had a lot of competitive success this year, but I am proud that the players learned there are many other ways to measure success. We are proud of where the program is in terms of competitiveness and reputation.  The college has invested in our program and it shows.  The higher expectations make coaching and playing more enjoyable."

The Knights will be back in action when they open the 2018-19 soccer season hungry for revenge.
