Men's Volleyball Program Named OCAA Team of the Week

The 5-2 Niagara College Men's Volleyball Program has been named Team of the Week by the Ontario College Athletic Association.

The Knights began the season losing two of their first three matches. Since November 10th however, the Knights have won four consecutive games including a dominant November 10th three-set sweep over the defending National Champion Humber Hawks.

The Knights began last week as the number eight ranked team in the OCAA.

November 22nd saw the Knights earn a dramatic five-set victory over the seventh ranked Fanshawe Falcons. The team then defeated the tenth ranked St. Clair Saints in straight sets on November 25th.

The Knights are currently tied for second place in the highly competitive OCAA West Division.

Leading the way during last week's two victories was first year outside hitter Jeff Scott. The Georgetown, Ontario native was dominant offensively for the Knights and his performances earned him Niagara College Athlete of the Week honours.

Fifth year outside hitter Shayne Petrusma has also been nearly unstoppable during the team's four game winning streak. The six-foot-six paramedic student is among the OCAA leaders in kills, digs, and points-per-set.

Defensively the knights have relied on a pair of middle blockers in Sam Youlton and Millar Galbraith. At the net, the Knights have outblocked their opponents 31-16 over their last four games.

The Knights next game is scheduled for Friday November 30th when the team visits the number two ranked Redeemer Royals (5-2). The Knights will then close out 2012 on Tuesday, December 4th when they visit the Mohawk Mountaineers (5-2).

Niagara College will host the 2013 Ironwood Wealth Management CCAA National Championships from March 7-9th.
