PREVIEW: Men's Volleyball at Mohawk

The Niagara College men's volleyball (10-5, 5th West) program have a tough matchup Friday, February 6, as they head on the road to play their final regular season away game against the Mohawk Mountaineers (14-1, 1st West).

The six playoff teams have already been determined in the OCAA West; however seeding may change drastically in the coming weeks.  Only two points separate the Knights from the second place Humber Hawks (11-4), while teams three through six are all tied with 20 points each.

Niagara is in line to host a qualifying match, even if they finish the regular season in second place because St. Clair is hosting the provincial championships, meaning only the top seed in the West will earn a bye directly to provincials.

Mohawk is the defending OCAA gold medalist and have won nine straight matches.  One more win this season will clinch the top spot for the Mountaineers.  The Knights are winners of five straight contests, with their last lost coming at the hands of Humber College.

This matchup features two of the best setters in the province at the collegiate level, with Mohawk's fifth year setter Mark Kaveckas (Barrie) leading the way at 9.88 assists per set, while Niagara's Steve Stone (St. Catharines) is right behind him with 9.65.

These two teams last met on October 31, 2014 and Mohawk won 3-0 – 25-19, 25-21, 25-18.  Mohawk was led by second year outside hitter Charlie Hancock (North Bay), who finished with a game-high 13 points.  Nathan Snippe (St. Anns) had a game-high 11 points for the Knights in the loss.
