RECAP: Knights capture victories against Cambrian and Boreal

The Niagara Knights men’s volleyball program opened the 2017-18 season with a pair of road victories over the Boreal Vipers and the Cambrian Golden Shield.

Friday October 27th saw the Knights earn a 4 set victory (3-1) over the hometown Golden Shield. After each team took one of the first two sets, the Knights responded by taking the third and fourth sets, earning their first victory of the season. Knights 1st year outside hitter Jaydon Milne (Toronto, Ont.) was impressive from the baseline with 7 aces.

When asked about his Friday’s game, head coach Nathan Groenveld was excited about his team’s overall performance. “This is always a tough game to play with a long bus ride and then right into the game. I thought we did a great job serving and taking away options. Offensively I thought Aidan Atkinson (Ingersoll, Ont.) was awesome distributing and kept us in rhythm all night. Robbie Zalewski (Ingersoll, Ont.) was incredible passing and defending. He kept a bunch of rallies alive and kept giving us opportunities to score points off his defense.”

The Knights responded Saturday afternoon with a three set victory over the Boreal Vipers. “Nice team win with a lot of guys contributing “said coach Groenveld. “Robbie Zalewski was awesome again with a ton of digs and passed really well. I thought we did a great job serving aggressively without getting reckless. Ashton Fehr (Leamington Ont.) saw his first action as a Knight and was awesome. He hit for a high efficiency and used his athletic ability well at the net to block. This victory pushed the knights to a 2-0 season record.

The Knights will be back in action when they host the Mohawk Mountaineers in the annual blue and white home opener Thursday, November 2nd at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre. Tip-off is at 8pm.
