Saturday, January 18th saw the Niagara Knights men's volleyball program open the 2018 half of the season with an impressive 3-1 victory over the visiting Conestoga Condors. The set scores in the contest were 25-19, 26-24, 28-30, 25-19.
"Overall we are happy with today's match" said Niagara Knights men's volleyball head coach Nathan Groenveld. "We had a very long mid-season break, and it's going to take a while to really get rolling, but I thought we played well against a talented Conestoga team."
Niagara was led offensively by six-foot-four outside hitter Mitch Sawatsky. The second year St. Catharines turned in a season best 20 kills. The Eden high School grad battled injuries in the first half of the season, but the mid-season break seemed to rejuvenate the talented attacker.
The win moves the Knights to 5-4 on the season and into three-way tie for fourth place in the crowded OCAA West Division. The Knights will face the Sheridan Bruins on the road on Sunday, January 14th. The two teams are deadlocked in the current OCAA standings.
