Knights Women’s Basketball Team Get Back In Win Column

The Niagara College Knights Women's Basketball team came away with a 66-46 win over the St. Clair College Saints on Sunday afternoon in Welland.

The Knights, who had lost their last two games, jumped out to a 34-24 lead after the first half. They were able to extend their lead in the 4th quarter by ooutscoring the Saints 15-5 en route to the victory.

Shelby Johnston (Welland, ON) shot 9-for-17 (53%) from the field and had a team-high 19 points to lead the Knights offensively. First-year players Kaitlyn McPherson (Welland, ON) and Miranda Ross (St. Catharines, ON) each had 12 points.

Meanwhile, Arica Price (Fort McMurray, AB) had 19 points on 6-for-20 (30%) shooting from the field for the Saints.

"It is nice to get the win, but we have to cut down on our fouls," said head coach Ron Lemon. "Nearly a third of their points came from the free-throw line," he added.

With the win, Niagara improves to 7-8 with three regular season games remaining in the 2011-2012 season. They are tied with the Mohawk College Mountaineers for 6th place in the OCAA West Region. The Mountaineers (7-9) won both meetings with the Knights this season.

The Knights are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to London to take on the first-place Fanshawe College Falcons (15-2), who have won eight of their last nine games. Niagara lost 65-61 in their first meeting with the Falcons back on November 12 in Welland. Game time Wednesday night is 6:00pm.
