Women's Basketball 1-1 During Trip to Sault St. Marie

The Niagara College Women's Basketball Program (3-4) travelled north to Sault St. Marie for a pair of weekend games against the Sault College Cougars (0-8) and Algoma Thunderbirds (7-1). The Knights defeated the Cougars 71-36 on Saturday night, before falling to the OCAA West Division leading Thunderbirds 62-30.

Knights' Head Coach Ron Lemon felt his team "played well' against Sault College. The team jumped out to an early 18-5 lead at the end of the first quarter, and never looked back.

Coach Lemon felt the game was important because it "gave the team the chance to play everyone on the roster." Leading the way for the Knights was third year forward Shelby Johnston. The five-foot-eleven Welland native finished with a game high 18 points and also added six rebounds.

On Sunday afternoon the team visited the OCAA West Division leading Algoma Thunderbirds on less than 24 hours rest. The Knights started the game slowly shooting just 17% from the field, and trialing 24-4 at the end of the first quarter.

The Knights played more competitive basketball in quarters two, three, and four, but Coach Lemon noted that his team "just couldn't recover from the 20 point difference."

The Knights will look to rebound this week as the team travels to Fanshawe on Friday, November 30th, before closing out 2012 on Sunday, December 2nd at 1:00pm against the St. Clair Saints at the Welland campus athletic centre.

All Knights varsity athletics feature free admission, and are live broadcasted and archived at www.sportslive.ca.
