Knights Basketball Split Versus Genesee

The Niagara College Men's and Women's Basketball Programs returned to the Welland campus athletic centre on Sunday, January 6th when they hosted the US-based Genesee College Cougars. The Women's Program earned an impressive 72-43 victory, while the men ran out a steam late in the second half and suffered a 90-81 loss.

The Women's Basketball Program played some of their strongest basketball of the season leading 45-18 at the half, before cruising to the dominant 29 point victory.

The Knights dramatically cut down their turnovers, a problem that has hurt the team in recent outings, and had a strong 42% shooting percentage in the game.

Fourth year Esthetics student Kate Montgomery of Waterford, Ontario led all scorers with 19 points. The performance earned the five-foot-ten forward Niagara College Female Athlete of the Week honours.

Also turning in strong performances for the Knights were Shelby Johnston with 13 points and Kaitlyn McPherson who notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.

The 3-6 Women's Basketball Program resumes regular season play on Saturday, January 12 when the team visits the Lambton Lions.

The Men's Basketball Program fell 90-81 to the Cougars in what was a high energy and fast paced affair.

The Knights came out strong in the first half taking a 45-39 lead into the break.

Genesee however went on an 11-1 run to start the second half that quickly erased the Niagara lead. The Cougars outscored the Knights 29-18 in the third quarter and earned the nine point victory.

Welland native Anto Raic led the Knights attack scoring 21 points and adding 12 rebounds.

The6-4 Men's Basketball Program will resume regular season play on Saturday, December 12th against the Lambton Lions, before returning to the Welland campus athletic centre on January 19th at 4:00pm when the team hosts the Algoma Thunderbirds.
