Knights Women's Basketball Defeat Sault College

Sunday, January 20th saw the Niagara College Women's Basketball Program enjoy their second strong outing in as many days. After narrowly losing to the OCAA leading Algoma Thunderbirds (11-1) on Saturday, the Knights defeated the Sault College Cougars 73-29 on Sunday afternoon at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre.

The Knights controlled the game from the opening tip-off, utilizing their entire bench in the process. All 12 players dressed for the contest recorded playing time, and 11 players scored points.

Leading the way offensively for the Knights was third year forward Shelby Johnston. The five-foot-eleven Educational Assistant student finished the game with 19 points and six rebounds.

Niagara Head Coach Ron Lemon called the win "big for the team. At this time of the year every point is important."

Also contributing offensively for the Knights was second-year centre Kaitlyn McPherson. The Welland native finished just one rebound shy of a double-double recording 12 points and 9 rebounds. Waterford, Ontario's Kate Montgomery also had a strong outing finishing with 14 points.

The win moves the Knights to 5-8 on the season, and keeps the team in contention for a playoff spot in the close and competitive OCAA West Division.

The Knights have won two of their last three games and will look to continue their solid play on Thursday, January 31st when the team hosts the 5-5 Mohawk Mountaineers at 6:00pm at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre.
