Women's Basketball Impressive in Home debut

The Niagara College women's basketball program opened their 2013 OCAA exhibition season with an impressive 103-45 victory over the Seneca Sting. Leading the way offensively for the Knights was veteran forward Shelby Johnston who finished the match with 21 points.

Niagara College women's basketball head coach Mike Beccaria commented "we played well tonight. It was a nice start to the season, but there is still a lot to work on."

Veteran forwards Shelby Johnston (21), Miranda Ross (16), and Katilyn McPherson (15) led the way offensively for the team.

A trio of guards making their home court debuts also turned in strong performances. Fonthill native Tara Giallonardo, who spent the last four seasons with the Brock Badgers, finished with 13 points and six assists. While first year St. Catharines native Mary Ingribelli recorded 14 points and three rebounds.

Niagara Falls native Alyssa McCabe recorded a team high seven assists. The second year point guard spent the 2012-13 season with the Brock Badgers before transferring to Niagara College to enroll in the Educational Assistant program.

When asked about his first coaching experience in the OCAA women's game, Coach Beccarria commented "our team philosophy is to work hard, put a smile on your face and have fun. I've never had so much fun coaching in my life."

The Knights will have a week off before travelling to Toronto to face the Centennial Colts on October 9th.

Beccaria continued "with Centennial next week, we need to continue working on our rebounding, and focus on executing our set offense."
