Knights Drop First Game of the Season

The Niagara College women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the 2013-14 season on Wednesday night, losing 66-56 to the undefeated Humber Hawks at the Humber Athletic Centre. The win moves the Hawks into first place in the OCAA West while the Knights slide into a tie for second with the Mohawk Mountaineers.

After the game Niagara College women's basketball head coach Mike Beccaria commented "Humber is a very strong defensive team and they play a very aggressive game."

The Knights struggled in the first half trailing 34-20 at halftime. The Knights outscored the Hawks 36-32 in the second half, but an outstanding third quarter performance by Aleena Domingo proved to be the difference. Domingo record 14 third quarters points and finished with a game high 26.

Despite the loss Coach Beccaria felt his team "showed real character" during a fourth quarter rally that saw the Knights pull within ten points of the Hawks.

Leading the way offensively for Niagara was veteran forward Shelby Johnston. The five-foot-eleven native of Welland finished the game with a team high 16 points.

The Knights will look to return to their winning ways on Sunday, November 17th when the team hosts the Mohawk Mountaineers in a battle for second place in the OCAA West. Tip-off is set for 1:30pm and for those unable to be in attendance, all Knights' home games are live broadcasted and archived at www.ocaatv.com.
