Second Place Finish for Women's Basketball

Second Place Finish for Women's Basketball

On Friday, October 17th, the Niagara College women's basketball program went on the road to compete in the 2014 Georgian College Fall Classic.

Game one had the Knights matched up against the Cambrian Golden Shield, coming away with a 59-41 victory.  Holding a lead throughout the game, Niagara's balanced attack helped them march in to the semi-finals.

Freshman forward Courtney McPherson (Welland, ON) had a game high 13 points to go a long with 9 rebounds.

In the semi-finals, Niagara took on the hometown Georgian Grizzlies in a game that was closer than the score may suggest.  Trailing by 10 points at half time, the Knights outscored the Grizzlies 45-17 in the second half to move on to the championship game with a 65-47 victory.

The gritty, come-from-behind win, was orchestrated by two veterans capable of going off on any given night. Senior forward Miranda Ross (St. Catharines, ON) had a game high 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Second year guard Mary Ingribelli (St. Catharines, ON) also had a double double, recording 16 points and 11 boards.

For the second straight year, the Knights have reached the finals to play the Mohawk Mountaineers.  Just like last year, the Knights came up short with a 68-49 loss, finishing the tournament in second place.

Mary Ingribelli led the Knights with 15 points and 7 rebounds.  Ingribelli and Ross were named 2014 Fall Classic All-Stars.

Up next for the Knights is the 2014-15 season opener against the Sheridan Bruins on the road.  Last season the Bruins finished 11-7, good for 5th place in the OCAA West with 22 points, tied with Niagara College.
