PREVIEW: Women's Basketball at Fanshawe

PREVIEW: Women's Basketball at Fanshawe

On January 24, the Niagara College basketball programs will be heading on the road to play the Fanshawe Falcons in game 12 of the OCAA regular season.

Game one will feature the women's basketball (5-6, 6th West) program tipping off against Fanshawe (9-3, 3rd West) at 5:00pm.  The Knights will be looking to get their record back to .500 and end a two game losing-streak.
The Falcons are coming off a 81-40 win at Lambton (3-8, 7th West) and now have a two game win streak.  Fanshawe is led by third year guard Stephanie Antwi (Toronto) who is averaging 10.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.

The Knights currently have a four-point lead in the standings over Lambton for the final playoff spot in the west division.  The last game for Niagara saw them lose on the road to very tough Humber (10-1, 2nd West) team.

These two teams last matched up on November 7, where Fanshawe pulled away in the final minutes of the game, winning 59-54.   Niagara was led by fourth year forward Kaitlyn McPherson (Welland) who had a game-high 12 points, along with eight rebounds.
Following the women's game, the men's basketball (3-8, 8th West) program will tip off against the Falcons (9-3, 3rd West) at 7:00pm.  The Knights have suffered five straight losses and will be facing a Fanshawe squad that has not lost at home this season (5-0).

Despite the losing streak, Niagara has been playing better basketball as of late, with four of their eight losses being ten points or less.  Coming off a loss at Humber (10-1, 1st West), the Knights need one more win to pass last season's win total.  Fifth year forward Ryan Christie (Hamilton) had his best game of the season, posting a season-high 17 points and 14 rebounds.

On November 7, these two teams met in a very entertaining game at the Welland Campus Athletic Center.  In a game that saw eight lead changes and four Knights score in double figures, Fanshawe escaped with a last second buzzer beater to win 78-76.  First year forward Delroy Grandison(Kingston, JA) filled the stat sheet with 14 points, four rebounds, an assist, steal and block.  Ryan Christie missed a double-double by one rebound, recording 14 points and nine boards.  Fanshawe was led by third year guard Chris Stanhope (Markham), who had a game-high 21 points in the win.
