PREVIEW: Knights travel to Mohawk seeking third straight victory

PREVIEW: Knights travel to Mohawk seeking third straight victory

The Niagara Knights women's basketball program (6-5, 5th OCAA West) will hit the road on Wednesday night to take on the Mohawk Mountaineers (7-3, 4th OCAA West) in Hamilton.

The Knights sit two points behind the Mountaineers in the West division standings and will be seeking a key victory on their march towards the playoffs. The contest will feature two of the OCAA's highest scoring offenses as Mohawk and Niagara rank second and fifth respectively in points per game. The Mountaineers are averaging 72.7 points per game, while Niagara follows closely with an average of 70.5. The teams are also evenly matched on the defensive side of the ball, where Niagara has a slight advantage giving up only 53.6 points per game to Mohawk's 54.6 per game.

In their previous matchup this season, the Knights dropped a 10 point decision to the Mountaineers, falling 76-66. Kaitlyn McPherson (Welland) led the Knights in that contest with 17 points, followed closely by sister Courtney McPherson (Welland) with 15 points. The difference in that matchup came from beyond the arc, as Mohawk drained nine three-pointers to the Knights five.

Since losing to the Mohawks just prior to the winter break, the Knights have outscored their opponents by a combined 166-87 in two games. Niagara will look to continue their strong play in Wednesday's contest. While they will no doubt look to be led by the McPherson sisters, the tightly matched contest will likely be dictated by the depth on both rosters.

The opening tip for Wednesday's game is scheduled for 6:00 pm at Mohawk's David Braley Athletics & Recreation Centre in Hamilton.
