RECAP: Knights fall back to .500 after loss to Mohawk

An 82-75 loss to the Mohawk Mountaineers knocked the Niagara Knights women's basketball program (1-1, 3rd OCAA West) back to .500. The Knights travelled to Hamilton on October 29th and were unable to overcome the defending OCAA Silver Medalists.

It was a back and forth game throughout. There were 7 lead changes in the contest, but in the end the Mountaineers were too much for Niagara. The Knights were down five following the first quarter, but were able to close the gap to one at the halftime break. However, Mohawk would extend the lead to 11 by the end of the third quarter and it was too much for Niagara to overcome. Although the Knights would close the gap, the Mountaineers held on for the seven point victory.

Courtney McPherson (Welland) led the way for the Knights with a double-double, recording 16 points and 11 rebounds. Three other Knights reached double digits in a losing cause. Alyssa McCabe (Niagara Falls) recorded 14, while Mary Ingribelli (St. Catharines) and Xuan Nguyen-Marshell (Scarborough) each had 11 to their credit.

"It was a tough game for us," said Knights Head Coach Mike Beccaria. "We were down 16 points early in the contest, but battled through." The difference in the game was rebounding and foul shooting. Mohawk out rebounded the Knights 43 to 35, and were able to get to the foul line 13 more times during the game.

The road doesn't get any easier for the Knights as they return to the Welland Campus Athletic Centre on Thursday, November 3rd for the 2nd Annual Blue and White Home Opener. The Knights take on the defending OCAA and CCAA Champion Humber Hawks. Tipoff is scheduled for 6pm. Student tickets are currently available at the Athletic Centre welcome desk in Welland. Tickets for all the game can be purchased at the door for $5.00 while students and those under the age of 17 are admitted free.
