NEWS: Women's Basketball add Thorold Secondary standout Hannah Baker

The Niagara College women's basketball program is pleased to announce the addition of Thorold native Hannah Baker. Baker joins the Knights from the Thorold Secondary School Golden Eagles and Niagara JUEL Elite program.

"Hannah is one of our top recruits for this season" said Niagara College women's basketball head coach Mike Beccaria. "She's very athletic and is a strong defensive player. We expect good things from her from the guard position."

The five-foot-nine Baker, brings a strong athletic resume that includes Thorold Secondary School athlete of the year honours in 2014, 2015, and 2016. She has been a team captain at both the Senior and Junior high school levels, and has significant experience competing at the JUEL Elite level.

"Thorold is a small town school and it's nice because everyone knows each other. I've heard Niagara has the same type of feel where everyone is friendly and knows one another" said Baker during a letter of intent signing event at the Niagara College Welland campus athletic centre. "Niagara has limitless opportunities as the school has great varsity sports, student centres, and potential volunteer opportunities."

Baker will enroll in the Niagara College Police Foundations program beginning in September of 2017. She continued "I want to maintain great academics, and I hope that my program will help give me a good idea of what I will be doing for the rest of my life."

Beccaria was quick to praise the maturity and work ethic of his newest recruit. "We first met Hannah in her grade 11 year. She is an excellent student and a quick study on the court. We have been extremely impressed by her dedication and willingness to work hard."

"I'm looking to have a strong rookie season, and contributing whatever I can to the team" added Baker. "Competing at the post-secondary level will definitely take some adjusting, but I hope to make the most of it, and in the end achieve the main goal of winning."

The Niagara Knights women's basketball program is coming off back-to-back fifth place finishes at the OCAA Championship. The team will begin their quest to take the next step and finish on the medal podium beginning in September of 2017.
