RECAP: Knights fall to Mountaineers, losing streak extends to 3

The Niagara Knights women's basketball program (1-3, 8th OCAA West) were looking to snap their two-game losing streak against the Mohawk Mountaineers (1-2, 6th OCAA West) this past Saturday. After making an incredible fourth quarter comeback in their season opener against the Redeemer Royals, the Knights dropped two games in a row against the Conestoga Condors and the Humber Hawks.

This game started off on the right page, as the Knights battled the Mountaineers tough in the first half, ultimately heading into half-time down 23-18. The third quarter remained close, as both teams scored 18 points, but once again the Knights couldn't get things going in the fourth quarter as they were outscored 24-13. The Knights would travel home with a 65-49 loss.

Tia Stys (St. Catharines) had an incredible game for the Knights, scoring 22 of the team's 49 points as she shot 47.8% (11-23). On top of her 22 points, Stys added 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. Stys was the team's only double-digit scorer, as they shot just 27.3% (21-77).

"Unfortunately, we are still struggling with our shooting and that is certainly something that needs to be addressed," said head coach Michael Beccaria. "The other struggle seems to be that we're having difficulty moving into new roles both individually and as a team. The players should be commended for their effort and dedication tonight though, and quite simply this is something that is going to take time."

A positive for the Knights was that they shot 77.8% (7-9) from the free-throw line, a major improvement over the last game against the Hawks when they shot just 50.0% (7-14).

The Knights will battle the U of T Mississauga Eagles (4-0, 1st OCAA West) in their next matchup on Thursday, November 8th. The game is scheduled to start at 6pm at the Niagara College Welland Campus Athletic Centre.
