The Niagara College women's soccer program moved into a tie for the sixth and final playoff spot in the OCAA West Division on Saturday after playing to a 1-1 draw with the St. Clair Saints. Recording the goal for the Knights was second year forward Robyn Deklerk.
The Saints opened the score early recording a goal in the 4th minute of the match. The Knights battled back, applying steady pressure throughout the early stages of the contest, before Dunneville native Deklerk capitalized on a loose ball scramble just outside the Saints goal in the 20th minute.
Deklerk is a graduate of Smithville Christian High School, is currently enrolled in the Niagara College Paramedic program, and was recently named a recipient of 2012-13 CCAA Scholar Athlete Award.
The draw sees the Knights walk away with a crucial point in the standings, but Head Coach Frank DeChellis felt his team failed to perform up to standards. "Technically and tactically we did not have our best game. And our best players were not our best players today." DeChellis continued "however, when you play ugly soccer and still manage a point, that's an indication that we have positive underlying qualities in our program. We are still on a positive trajectory."
The Knights received a strong outing from first year midfielder Rachel Wachner. Wachner, a native of Grimsby played all 90 minutes in the contest, and for her performance was named Niagara College female athlete of the week.
After the match the Educational Assistant student stated "I'm looking forward to building on what we have, finishing the regular season strong, and hopefully being in a playoff position when everything is done."
Up next for the Knights is a crucial road matchup against the 2-2 Mohawk Mountaineers on Wednesday, September 25th at the Redeemer Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 4:30pm
