Women's Soccer Fall to Lambton

Women's Soccer Fall to Lambton

The Niagara College women's soccer program wrapped up their 2013 season on Sunday, October 6th with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Lambton Lions. The Knights will finish the 2013 campaign with a record of 1-6-1.

The back and forth affair saw the two teams trade scoring chances throughout the match. Grimsby native Melanie Bajic continued her outstanding play in goal, turning aside several strong scoring chances by the Lions.

Lambton opened the scoring in the 13th minute on a goal by Sarah Harding.

The Knights however responded in the 33rd minute when Cassie Broadbent converted on a setup from first-year midfielder Rachel Wachner (Grimsby). Broadbent is in her first year with the Knights, and is currently studying Early Childhood Education.

At the 70:00 minute mark of the match a scary moment occurred when Knights' midfielder Kayla Cassar was involved in a head-on-head collision with a Lions player. Cassar remained down on the field for several minutes. Cassar was eventually taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.

After the 12-minute delay, the Knights seemed unable to regain their rhythm, and the Lions capitalized eventually scoring the game winner in the 91st minute.

When asked about the 2013 season, Knights' head coach Frank DeChellis commented "Next year is already on my mind. Our program managed some results. Two other games this season were 1 goal losses in the last 15 minutes of the match. But it's how the girls expected themselves to play that showed us that there is attitude there for growth.  Fitness expectations were high and we started to develop at style of play that the players seemed to enjoy."
