RECAP: Knights surrender loss to St.Clair; Look to rebound against Redeemer

Saturday, October 14th saw the Niagara Knights (3-4-2, 4th OCAA West) women's soccer program drop a 1-0 decision to the St. Clair Saints (6-2-1, 3rd OCAA West). Prior to the game against St. Clair, the Knights were undefeated in their last 5 regular season games.

After the Saints went on top in the 26th minute, the Knights played solid defensively, but couldn't muster up enough offense to even the score.

Knights Keeper Alexis Hebert (Waterdown Ont.) had another solid performance, only allowing one goal on 12 shots on target. Prior to the goal, Hebert recorded 4 straight games with a shutout. Hebert's ability to keep her team in games will be a key factor heading into Wednesday's game against Redeemer as well as the qualifier against Seneca on Sunday.

Defenders Shannon Halliday (Welland, Ont.), Lauren Frasca (Welland, Ont.) and Genny Frick (St. Catharines) were strong defensively again for the Knights, who kept the high powered Saints offence to a single goal. The Knights have been very good defensively all year, only giving up 8 goals in their last 9 games. The defense will need to continue to be solid as they approach the end of the regular season.

With 4th place in the OCCA west division guaranteed, Knights' head coach Rob Lalama wants his players to continue to play hard and prepare for one game at a time. "We have a busy week. We'll prepare for Redeemer on Wednesday, then we need to prepare for our qualifying game at Seneca on Sunday."

The Knights will be back in action as they host the Redeemer Royals Wednesday, October 18th in the last game of the season. Kick off is 4pm at Youngs Sportsplex in Welland.
