October 3, 2019...WELLAND - The Knights women's soccer team shut-out the University of Toronto-Mississauga (UTM) 7-0 in last night's midweek match-up at Youngs Sportsplex.
Terin Hultink (1st year, Fenwick) got things rolling for the Knights early on, when she found the back of the net on a free kick opportunity just outside the Eagle's 18 yard box. Less than two minutes later, second year forward Katelyn Mix (2nd year, Gilford) got her body on the ball in front of Eagles keeper Noor Aldoori (3rd year, Mississauga) to make it 2-0 six minutes into the half.
From there on out, it the first-year standout Julianne Buist show. Buist, of Canfield Ontario, went on a four goal run starting at the 12 minute mark of the game. She would add two more before the end of the half, contributing to the Knights 5-0 lead heading into the half.
Buist and Wiktoria (Vicky) Keller (1st year, Denmark) would combine for two more goals late in the second half to put the finishing touches on a 7-0 win over UTM.
Buists four goal effort marks her seventh of the season in her first year with the Knights. She currently leads all Knights scorers with seven goals in six games played. Buist also managed to set a program record last night, with most goals scored in a single game, with the previous record being three by three different players (Jackie Lawther, Alex Pasco, Alexandra Craig).
Buist is also on pace to surpass teammate Michelle Maecker's (3rd year, Fonthill) career record for goals in a single season, after tying Maecker's record last night at seven. Maecker still leads in total career goals with 14.
Last night's thumping of UTM gave the Knights the boost they needed, after being handed a similar loss last week to the first place Fanshawe Falcons. Maecker agreed that the win was a huge momentum swing her team needed heading into Saturday's game against Sheridan.
"This was a much needed win after our last game," said Maecker. "We worked as a team an applied pressure right away. Our rookies showed that they feel comfortable and we're excited to see what the next three games have in store for us."
Head coach Rob Lalama agreed.
"We came out of the gates flying with a lot of jump," said Lalama. "It was a solid win and with that we will now begin our preparation for our Sheridan game on Saturday."
The Knights now sit at 4-2 in the OCAA West division with three games at hand, starting this Saturday at 2:00 P.M. at Sheridan (4-2).
