Knights Defeat Conestoga on the Road

On Sunday, January 11, the Niagara College women's volleyball (8-3, 3rd West) program went on the road to face the Conestoga Condors (1-9, 9th West).  For the sixth time this season, the Knights swept the match, defeating Conestoga in straight sets – 25-21, 25-19, 25-22.

Eleven players participated in the match for Niagara, allowing for some starters to get extra rest.  The Knights were battling multiple players being sick, so a straight set win was much needed for Niagara.  In two contests this season, the Knights have not conceded a set to the Condors.

When asked which athlete made the biggest impact in the match, head coach Joey Martins spoke about first year middle blocker Shaniah Wielink (Vineland).  "The second set was close until the 18 point mark, when Shaniah entered the game," said coach Martins.  "Bailey Davis set the ball immediately and Shaniah destroyed the ball straight down in one of the biggest attacks of the year.  From that attack we carried all the momentum and took control of the match."

Top scorers for Niagara were third year Sport Management major Linnea Davis (Brampton), who had a game high 13 points along with 13 digs.  Another ten point effort from middle blocker Nicole Schoonderwoerd (Tavistock) helped her earn this week's SAC award for female athlete of the week.

Up next for the Knights will be the fifth place Redeemers Royals (5-4) on Friday, January 16, at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre.
