RECAP: CCAA's 11th ranked Knights defeat Moutaineers; Sixth straight win

Friday, February 6th saw the CCAA's 11th ranked Niagara College women's volleyball program defeat the Mohawk Mountaineers 3-0 at the David Braley Athletic Centre in Hamilton. The set scores were 25-18, 25-21, 25-14, and the victory gives the Knights their sixth consecutive win.

Niagara College women's volleyball head coach joey Martins called the outing "an all-around great game" for his team.

With the Mountaineers battling for a playoff spot, the Knights needed a strong performance to maintain their month-long unbeaten streak and the team met the challenge.

Four Knights finished the game in double digit scoring.

Fifth-year outside hitter Lucy McLay (Stratford) led all scorers with 13 points on 11 kills, an ace, and a block. Fourth-year middle blocker Alexandria Botelho (Stoney Creek) converted on 8 of 15 swings, finishing with eight kills, and four stuff blocks.

Second-year outside hitter Madison Morgan (Whitby) finished with 11 kills and a block, while six-foot-one rookie middle blocker Devon Lowes (Oakville) recorded six kills, four blocks, and an ace.

Coach Martins singled out the first-year Lowes' performance in the match commenting "Devon has stepped up for Nicole (Schooderwoerd) who has been injured with a broken finger.  For a first year to come in and play at the level she did. She has really settled down and contributed to our success as a program."

First-year setter Bailey Davis (Georgetown) maintained her OCAA leading assist totals, finishing the match with 33 helpers. Davis is averaging 8.21 assists-per-set in 2014-15.

"Overall it was a great team win. We came out and played our game, nothing overly flashy, we just played the way we wanted to" added Coach Martins. "Now we look forward to earning some redemption against Sheridan in our next match."

The Knights (13-3) will host the Sheridan Bruins (12-5) on Thursday, February 12th at the Welland Athletic Centre at 6:00pm. The two teams last met on November 26th in a marathon that saw the Bruins edge out a five set victory.
