RECAP: Niagara takes 5-set victory over Mountaineers in home opener

The Niagara Knights women's volleyball program (3-0, 1st OCAA West) opened the home portion of the OCAA regular season with a 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-11) victory over the visiting Mohawk Mountaineers (1-1, 3rd OCAA West). It was the first five set match for the Knights this year, who battled back from a 2-1 deficit for the victory.

The Knights came out firing in the opening set, grabbing a 25-18 set victory. Hwoever, the tide would change for the second and third sets. The Knights would trail significantly in both sets before battling back to close the gap in each. Mohawk found a way to finish each set. The Knights rebounded in the fourth and fifth sets on the backs of their strong defence and a veteran presence.

Rachel Rivers (Cambridge) and newcomer Brooklyn Hamilton (Valleyview, AB) led the way for the Knights with 15 points apiece. Hamilton made her presence felt on both sides of the ball, recording 10 kills to go along with three blocks and two service aces. Linnea Davis (Brampton) and Jordan Koslowski (Hamilton) both reached double digit, each scoring 12 points in the victory. Koslowski also contributed with 12 digs in the match. Bailey Davis (Georgetown) once again did a tremendous job distributing the ball to her attackers, providing 34 assists from the Knights offence.

Niagara will now wait a week for their next match, when they head to Hamilton to take on the Redeemer Royals (1-1, 3rd OCAA West) on November 11th. The Knights will return to the Welland Campus Athletic Centre on November 17th when the Conestoga Condors (0-3, 8th OCAA West) visit.
