Women's Volleyball Sweeps Visiting Condors in Home Opener

The Niagara College women's volleyball team earned a crowd-pleasing 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-17) win over the visiting Conestoga Condors Saturday afternoon in their home opening game in Welland.

Coming off a 3-0 loss to Humber two days before, the sweep of the Condors helped get the Knights back in the win column.

"It's always a nice feeling to get back on the winning track, especially at home in front of such an excited crowd," said head coach Steve Dow.  "After being involved in 3 straight home openers for our opponents it was our turn and our crowd was a huge boost."

Niagara was led by rookie Kristen Oudman (1st year, Wainfleet) who had 14 kills, followed up by senior Natasha Desjardines (3rd year, Welland) and Anica Habertsock (2nd year, Vernon, B.C.) who each had 12. Madelyn Berg (2nd year, St. Catharines) led with 13 digs.

"We are still working towards a more balanced offence at the net. Conestoga is a very scrappy team but lucky for us our first year rookie Kristen was able to get some key kills when we needed it." "Our serve let us now down a little bit in the first set, but in the second set a big serving run by Montanna Taylor (2nd year, St. Catharines) and in the third by Veronika Latawiec ( 2nd year, Toronto) helped propel us to a three set win. We will need a little bit more balance and consistency in our next game but look forward to another challenge against Mohawk."

The Knights, now 3-1, return to action Friday when they travel to Mohawk (4-0) for 6:00 P.M.
