Female Athlete of the Week – Devon Lowes, Women’s Volleyball

Devon Lowes of the Niagara College women’s volleyball program has been named this week’s female athlete of the week. From the middle blocker position Lowes was dominant during the Knights November 14th three set victory over the Visiting Sheridan Bruins.

The Oakville native finished with 16 points including team highs in kills (9), blocks (5), and aces (2). In addition leading the team in scoring with an average of 3.2 points-per-set, Lowes also serves as the Knights’ team captain.

“Devon has really become a go to player for us in all facets of the game” said Niagara College women’s volleyball head coach joey Martins. “She is arguably the best middle in the league at the moment and has been since game one.”

Lowes, who is a graduate of White Oaks Secondary School, is currently leading the OCAA in blocks, and has a major factor in helping lift the Knights to a 5-1 record (2nd place OCAA West).

Lowes and the rest of the Niagara College women’s volleyball program will return to action on Thursday, November 19th when the team travels to Etobicoke to take on the undefeated Humber Hawks (5-0).

Male Athlete of the Week – Andy Hein, Cross Country

For the second time this season, Niagara College three sport student-athlete Andy Hein (Omemee, ON) has been named male athlete of the week. November 14th saw Hein place 16th at the 2015 CCAA National Championship in Brockville Ontario.

Hein is the first ever Niagara College cross country runner to qualify for the CCAA National Championship. The third year Broadcasting student qualified for the event via a 12th place finish, a feat that saw him named an OCAA second team all-star, at the OCAA Championship in Sault St. Marie.

Hein spent the Fall semester competing for both the Niagara College men’s soccer and cross country teams. His 16th place finish in Brockville was the sixth best performances by an OCAA participant. Hein also competes as a member of the Niagara College curling team, where he is expected to assume the Skip position for the four-man men’s team.

The November 14th CCAA National Cross Country Championship formally concludes the 2015 season for the Knights. The team will continue training in the off-season and will look to improve heading into their third season of OCAA competition beginning in September of 2016.
