McCabe and Hylton named athletes of the week

Female Athlete of the Week – Alyssa McCabe, Women’s Basketball

Alyssa McCabe (Niagara Falls) of the Niagara Knights women’s basketball program has been named this week’s female athlete of the week. McCabe and the Knights won the consolation final, clinching 5th place in the OCAA, at this weekend’s OCAA Women’s Basketball Championship.

Hosted on home court, McCabe was the Knights most consistent player through the three game tournament. She recorded a team-high 13 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the Knights tournament opening loss to the Algonquin Thunder. Her performance was enough to earn her player of the game honours for the Knights.

McCabe was the hero in the consolation semi-final, scoring the game winning basket with under 10 seconds remaining against the Lambton Lions. After having her initial attempt blocked, a fortuitous bounce found the ball back in McCabe’s hands where she went up again to seal the victory for Niagara. The Knights rounded out the weekend with a 69-59 victory in the consolation final against the St. Clair Saints. McCabe chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds for the Knights.

Male Athlete of the Week – Lequan Hylton, Men’s Basketball

Lequan Hylton of the Niagara Knights men’s basketball program has been named this week’s athlete of the week. Hylton was a key factor in the Knights capturing the consolation final at this weekend’s OCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. 

Despite losing the opening game against the Sheridan Bruins, Hylton held the hot hand. He posted 22 points, on the strength of five three-pointers in the contest. He added three rebounds and five assists en route to earning player of the game honours for the Knights. 

Rebounding form a tough loss on day one of the tournament, Hylton and the Knights earned a 75-60 victory over the St. Lawrence-Kingston Vikings. He recorded a game and season-high seven points to go along with eight points, five rebounds, and three steals. Hylton rounded out the tournament in the consolation final with two points, two steals, three rebounds, and three assists in the Knights 78-75 victory over the La Cite Coyotes.
