Female Athlete of the Week - Lorelle Weavers, Women's Golf

Lorelle Weavers (Burlington) of the Niagara Knights golf team has been named this week's Niagara College female athlete of the week. Weavers captured her second consecutive OCAA gold medal at the 2016 OCAA Golf Championship, presented by Belairdirect.

Weavers earned the gold medal, the second OCAA gold of her career, with a three round total of 230, earning a one stroke victory over the Georgian Grizzlies Addison Wallwin. Rounds of 73, 78, and 79 were enough for Weavers to solidify herself as the preeminent female collegiate golfer in the province. She grabbed the lead after a strong day one performance at National Pines Golf Course in Innisfil and never let go.

Weavers held a one stroke lead over the Grizzlies golfer following the first day, and extended the lead to three following the tournament's second round. On day three Wallwin made a push on Georgian's home course, narrowing the gap to two at the turn. However, a birdie by Weavers on her 17th hole extended the lead back to two. Although giving one back on the tournament's final hole, Weavers held on to add the gold to her already extensive medal collection.

Weavers will now head to PEI with the Knights on October 17th to compete in the 2016 PING CCAA National Golf National Championship, hosted by Holland College. Weavers is looking to return to the top of the podium after won the CCAA Championship in 2014. She finished fourth at last year's event.

Male Athlete of the Week - Josiah Dixon, Men's Golf

Josiah Dixon (Bognor) of the Niagara Knights golf team has been named this week's Niagara College male athlete of the week. Dixon won the OCAA gold medal at the 2016 OCAA Golf Championship, presented by Belairdirect. He also was a key contributor to the Knights men's team OCAA gold medal.

Dixon was dominant throughout the week, posting three rounds of even par or better en route to victory. After finishing the first round tied for second, one stroke back of the leader, Dixon took control. A four-under 68 was enough to propel him into first, grabbing a three stroke lead entering the final day. Dixon's lead would provde to be insurmountable as he carded an even par 72 on the final day to capture his first OCAA Championship. He finished the tournament at 6-under par for a three day total of 210.

The play of Dixon was bolstered by the remainder of their Knights teammates, as Niagara captured the men's team championship for the second straight year. Heading into the final round trailing by three strokes, the Knights made up five strokes to take the gold medal over the host Georgian Grizzlies.

Dixon and the Knights will now head to PEI on October 17th to compete in the 2016 PING CCAA National Golf National Championship, hosted by Holland College. The Knights men are the defending silver medalists in the team event.
