Female Athlete of the Week – Tianna Stys, Women’s Basketball

Tianna Stys of the Niagara College women’s basketball program has been named this week’s female athlete of the week. This marks the first time the second year forward has captured the accolade.

Stys was a force for the Knights during the team’s 69-39 home court victory over the Lambton Lions. The six-foot, native of St. Catharines finished the game with career highs in both points (16) and rebounds (13).

The former Holy Cross standout “worked really hard during the off season, and that hard work is really paying off in her game” said Niagara College women’s basketball head coach Mike Beccaria.

Stys is currently enrolled in the Niagara College educational assistant program, and is averaging 7.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, while shooting an efficient 45.2%.

The Niagara College women’s basketball program will return to action on November 15th when the team visits the Redeemer Royals.

Male Athlete of the Week – Ben Fillmore, Men’s Volleyball

Ben Fillmore (Cayuga) of the Niagara College men’s volleyball program has been named this week’s male athlete of the week.

Returning from an early season injury, the fourth year setter was a force during the team’s dramatic five-set come-from-behind victory over the Conestoga Condors. Fillmore recorded a career best 46 assists in the match, and served as the offensive catalyst in helping rally the Knights from a two-set deficit in the contest.

Fillmore and the rest of the 3-1 Niagara Knights men’s volleyball program will return to action on November 18th when they host the St. Clair Saints at 2:30pm at the Welland Campus Athletic Centre
