NEWS: Therrien and Ingribelli named athletes of the week

Male Athlete of the Week – Jake Therrien, men’s Soccer

Jake Therrien of the Niagara College men’s soccer team has been named this week’s male athlete of the week.

Therrien was an anchor for the Knights during the OCAA Championship held last week in Peterborough. The Knights finished fourth in the event, qualifying for the medal round via a hard fought 3-2 quarterfinal victory over the George Brown Huskies.

The Welland native and graduate of Notre Dame, broke the 1-1 deadlock against the Huskies with a fantastic individual effort that saw the midfielder beat a pair of defenders before chipping a finish over the George Brown goalkeeper.

"Over three games Jake gave us the quick first step, that surge to get the attack going” said Niagara Knights head coach Frank DeChellis. “I've had very few players who attack open space the way Jake does. He is an exciting player who likes to challenge defenders at full speed."

Female Athlete of the Week – Mary Ingribelli, women’s basketball

Mary Ingribelli of the Niagara College women’s basketball program has been named this week’s female athlete of the week.

The St. Catharines native is off to a red hot start for the Knights, averaging 20.5 points through the team’s first two games. The fourth year former Governor Simcoe standout is also giving the Knights 6.5 rebounds and three assists per game.

“Mary is off to the best start of her career” said Niagara Knights women’s basketball head coach Mike Beccaria. “She is a skilled and veteran player who is also giving us strong leadership this season.”

The Knights split their opening two contests and up next the team travel to London to take on the Fanshawe Falcons on November 2nd.
