Male Athlete of the Week- Andrew Currie
Andrew Currie of the Niagara College men’s soccer program has been named this week’s Male Athlete of the Week.
The fourth year defender out of Woodstock, Ontario received the award after an impressive game against the Mohawk Mountaineers that saw him play well defensively as well as come through in the clutch with a final minute goal to tie the game. Head coach Frank DeChellis gave the winger/defender a shout out after the game Tuesday, praising his ability to “stay involved with the attack as well as his ability to create channels for runs down the flanks.”
Currie has been an anchor on defense for the Knights this season. His ability to control the backfield as well as his leadership on and off the pitch has been integral to a Knights’ team that has had a very successful season thus far.
He and the rest of the Niagara College men’s soccer program (5-1-1, 2nd OCAA West) return to action when they host the OCAA west division leading Fanshawe Falcons (5-0-2, 1st OCAA West) Wednesday, October 11th at Youngs Sportsplex in Welland. If the Knights win this game, they claim sole possession of first place in the OCAA west division for the first time this season.
Female Athlete of the Week- Alexis Hebert
Alexis Hebert of the Niagara College women’s soccer program has been named this week’s Female Athlete of the Week.
The rookie goalkeeper from Waterdown, Ontario receives the award after recording a 23 save shutout against a talented Mohawk Mountaineer soccer program. The first year keeper has not allowed a goal against in three straights games.
Since returning from injury, Hebert has been outstanding down the stretch for a Knights’ team who was struggling to find wins early in the season. The Knights are 2-0-1 in during her 3 game shutout streak and have continued to climb in the OCAA west division standings with her on the pitch. Her impressive performance this week against the Mountaineers demonstrates how crucial her success is to the team overall.
The Niagara Knights (3-3-1, 4th OCAA West) will look Hebert to continue her success as keeper when they host the OCAA west division leading Fanshawe falcons (7-0, 1st OCAA West) at Youngs Sportsplex on October 11th in a game that is sure not to disappoint.
