NEWS: Williams and Maecker named athletes of the week

Male Athlete of the Week

Carlos Williams of the Niagara College men’s soccer program has been named this week’s Male Athlete of the Week.

The third year striker originating from St. Catharines, Ontario finished the week off with an impressive three goals in two games, both in which resulted in Knights’ victories. This week was even more special for the Knights’ striker as he surpassed alumnus Matt Miedema for most all-time goals with 13 goals in his OCAA career.

Williams has played an integral role in lifting the Knights to a 5-1 start to this season, scoring three goals in six regular season games. His ability to make things happen on the field goes far beyond just scoring goals, as his on-field presence improves the play of all the players around him. Williams will go down as one of Niagara’s all-time great goals scorers, but for now, he looks to help his team to a CCAA championship.

He and the rest of the Niagara College men’s soccer program (5-1, 2nd OCAA West) will look to stretch their winning streak to an impressive 6 games when the team travels to Ancaster on Octobers 3rd to take on the Mohawk Mountaineers (2-5, 5th OCAA West).

Female Athlete of the Week

Michelle Maecker of the Niagara College women’s soccer program has been named this week’s Female Athlete of the Week.

The rookie striker from Fonthill, Ontario receives the award after having an impressive week offensively, scoring three goals in two games. The leading goal-scorer for the Knights this season has been red hot all season, scoring five goals in six regular season games.

After a slow start to the Knight’s season, Maecker’s ability to put the ball in the net as of late has resulted in three straight victories for the women. When asked about her success this year, Maecker was quick to give praise to her teammates, as well as mentioning that she is “working hard in practice to improving her game, and thankful that she could contribute in any way towards the overall team goals.” The rookie stricker has scored in all three of the Knights' victories this season.

The Niagara Knights (3-3, 4th OCAA West) will continue to look to Maecker to score goals when they travel to Ancaster October 3rd to take on the Mohawk Mountaineers (5-1-1, 2nd OCAA West).
