Athletes of the Week

Lequan Hylton - Men's Basketball

Lequan Hylton (Mississauga) of the men’s basketball program is this week’s Niagara College Male Athlete of the Week.

In his first game back since returning to the Niagara Knights, Hylton started off strong registering 18 points while showing off his long-range shooting abilities by scoring five three-pointers. Playing 30 minutes as the Knights sixth man, Hylton also contributed with five assists, setting up his teammates and helping propel the Knights to an 89-85 victory over the Redeemer Royals.

Hylton returned to the Knights for his second stint with the team, having previously played three seasons in a Niagara uniform from 2014 to 2017. In his latest season with the Knights (2016-17), the veteran point guard averaged 14.6 points, 2.9 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game in 27.5 minutes per game.

Hylton and the Niagara Knights will continue their OCAA regular season schedule when they host the Lambton Lions at 3pm on Saturday, January 19th.

Bridget Atkinson - Women's Basketball

Bridget Atkinson (Welland) of the women's basketball program has been named Niagara College Female Athlete of the Week.

Atkinson had perhaps one of the most dominant individual performances of any OCAA women’s basketball player in the Knights 75-59 win against the Redeemer Royals on Friday night.

After scoring 14 points in the first half, Atkinson exploded offensively, scoring 23 points to bring her game total to 37. On top of that, the Knights starting point guard added 13 rebounds and was ruthless defensively, forcing 12 steals. Atkinson also dished out 6 assists, nearly putting up a quadruple double.

“It’s really nice to start the new year off with a win on the road,” said Knights head coach Mike Beccaria. “The story here though is Bridget [Atkinson]. Arguably one of the best performances by a player on a team that I’ve coached ever.”

Atkinson and the rest of the Niagara Knights women’s basketball program will play host to the Lambton Lions in their next match. The game will take place on Saturday, January 19th at 1pm.
