NEWS: Yates & Zalewski named Niagara College Athletes of the Week

Alannah Yates - Women's Basketball

First year guard Alannah Yates of the women's basketball program has been named Niagara College Athlete of the Week.

Yates, who played on the senior boys' basketball team during her high school career in Hamilton, was a key figure in a pair of Knights road victories over the Sault Cougars.

On back-to-back days Yates recorded double digit scoring totals. On Saturday in the Knights 64-47 victory over the Cougars, she dropped 16 points, five rebounds, and two assists in only 15 minutes. Just 19 hours later, Yates followed up with 17 points, four rebounds, and six assists as the Knights defeated Sault 73-51.

After a slow start to the season, Yates has now recorded three straight double-digit performances on the Knights current three game winning streak. Head Coach Mike Beccaria believes the young guard is starting to reach her potential. "Alannah is starting to play like we thought she could in September," said Beccaria after the weekend road trip. "Her progress has been steady and confidence is growing as a key contributor in this league."

After four straight road games, the Knights return to the friendly confines of the Welland Campus Athletic Centre as they welcome the Fanshawe Falcons on November 29th. The opening tip is set for 6pm.

Robbie Zalewski - Men's Volleyball

Robbie Zalewski of the men's volleyball team has been named Niagara College Athlete of the Week.

The second-year Libero has been a significant part of the Knights current four-game winning streak, including this past weekend's 5-set victory over the Sheridan Bruins. In the victory Zalewski contributed a season high 16 digs, while chipping in a pair of assists. The dig total was the second highest of Zalewski's young career, behind only an 18-dig performance against the same Bruins last year.

Earmarked at the start of the season as one of the Knights captains, the leadership of the Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute has quietly lived up to the hype. After the team struggled out of the gate getting their feet wet with a new head coach, Zalewski has provided timely defence, including Sunday afternoon in helping turn the Knights season around.

The Knights will now face a tough test when the visiting Humber Hawks come to the Welland Campus Athletic Centre on November 29th, before heading to Windsor to take on the St. Clair Saints on December 1st. Opening serve is slated for 8pm.
