NEWS: Mix & Atkinson named Niagara College Athletes of the Week

Female – Kaitlyn Mix, Women’s Soccer

Women’s soccer player Kaitlyn Mix (Gilford) has been named the Niagara College co-female athlete of the week for the second consecutive week.

The first-year pre-health sciences student was instrumental in the Knights earning a berth in the OCAA Championship for the first time in program history. Mix scored a pair of goals, extending her goal streak for four consecutive games, in the Knights 3-0 victory over the George Brown Huskies.

After giving up some chances earlier, Mix settled the team by putting home her first career playoff goal in the 30th minute. She would add her second of the game, the first time in program history a Knights player has scored twice in a playoff game, in the 57th minute to put the game out of reach.

"I was proud of how our team stayed calm despite being outchanced by George Brown initially," said head coach Rob Lalama. "We weathered the storm, and Kaitlyn's goal in the 30th minute set us on our way."

Mix and her teammates will now shift their focus to the 2018 OCAA Women's Soccer Championships, hosted by Seneca College. The Knights will open the tournament on Thursday, September 25th at 1pm against the Durham Lords.

Bridget Atkinson (Welland) of the Niagara Knights women's basketball program has been named the Niagara College co-female athlete of the week.

The fourth year guard made her Niagara Knights debut against the Redeemer Royals. Atkinson was a pivitol piece in the Knights come from behind victory, defeating the Royals 83-79 in overtime. Despite a slow start, Atkinson finished the contest with a double double, recording 30 points and 17 rebounds.

After falling behind early, Atkinson scored 24 of her 30 points in the 2nd half, including the game tying bucket with just six seconds remaining. The former Junior National Team player has already established herself as a leader on and off the court for the Knights.

The Knights will now take their show on the road, taking on the Conestoga Condors on the road on Wednesday, October 24th. The Knights will next play at home on November 1st in the annual Blue & White game, as the Humber Hawks come to town. The night will feature a tailgate in TheCore, giveaways, and a night of entertainment.
