NEWS: Macsai & Makinwa named Athletes of the Week

Male – Temi Makinwa, Men’s Soccer

Men’s soccer player Temi Makinwa (Brampton) has been named the Niagara College male athlete for the week for a pair of road performances against the St. Clair Saints and Lambton Lions.

After missing the first game of the season Makinwa put in a workman’s like performance on the road against the Saints and Lions. Over a blistering hot 2 matches, Makinwa put in a full 180 minutes on route to a pair of Knights victories. He proved to be a disruptive influence on the field throughout the entire weekend road trip, playing intelligently on both sides of the ball.

“Having Temi in the lineup gives us many options in the configuration of our starting 11,” said Head Coach Frank DeChellis. “His commitment to offseason training in the weight room and on the track paid off this weekend as he didn’t lose a step throughout either match.”

Heading into the weekend Makinwa felt the pressure to play well in his season debut. “Coming into this weekend I felt like I had something to prove,” said the Brampton, Ontario native. “However, we had good communication across the backline, which made by job easier during both games.”

Makinwa and his teammates will put their 3-0 record on the line against the undefeated Fanshawe Falcons (2-0-1 OCAA West). The Knights host the Falcons on September 19th at Youngs Sportsplex. Kick-off is scheduled for 6pm.

Female – Samantha Macsai, Women’s Soccer

Samantha Macsai (Port Colborne) has been named the Niagara College female athlete of the week following a pair of weekend road games against the St. Clair Saints and Lambton Lions.

A pesky defender, Macsai played a significant role in securing a pair of clean sheets. On route to their first two victories of the season, the third year Lakeshore Catholic graduate was all over the field, snuffing out any significant chances for the Saints or Lions.

“Sam brought her ‘A’ game this weekend,” noted Head Coach Rob Lalama. “Despite the very hot temperatures she ran miles through the weekend, and has been able to bring her game to a completely new level this season.”

Macsai and the Knights will look to build on the momentum gained this past weekend when they welcome the 3-0 Fanshawe Falcons to Youngs Sportsplex on September 19th. Kickoff is scheduled for 4pm.
