Male Athlete of the Week - Bailey Cochrane
Bailey Cochrane of the Niagara College men’s volleyball program has been selected as this week’s male athlete of the week. Cochrane has given the Knights an outstanding defensive presence from the libero position throughout the 2013-14 season.
Cochrane had a strong game for the Knights during a hard fought January 25th loss to the Fanshawe Falcons. Cochrane led the team with 13 digs, adding to his OCAA leading total of 188.
A five-foot-eleven native of Barrie, Cochrane is a graduate of Barrie North Collegiate Institute.
Niagara College men’s volleyball head coach Nathan Groenveld commented “despite being a first-year player, Bailey provides our program with stability through his defensive abilities and passing game.”
Cochrane is currently enrolled in the Niagara College sales and marketing program.
Female Athlete of the Week - Shelby Johnston
Shelby Johnston of the Niagara College women’s basketball program has been selected as this week’s female athlete of the week.
Johnston stands at five-foot-eleven, and plays the forward position for the Knights. During the Knights January 25th loss to the Fanshawe Falcons, Johnston finished with 10 points and a team high nine rebounds.
Niagara College women’s basketball head coach Mike Beccaria commented “Shelby has really been a stalwart for us defensively and in the rebounding game over the last two weeks. She was our best player versus Fanshawe.”
Johnston, who is in her fourth year with the Knights, serves as the Knights team captain. The Welland native is a graduate of Centennial Secondary School, and is currently enrolled in the Niagara College social worker program.
Johnston is averaging 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game this season.
