NC Men's Soccer and Kaitlyn Mcpherson Named Athletes of the Week

Male Athlete of the Week - The Men's Soccer Program

The Niagara College men’s soccer program has been selected as this week’s male athlete(s) of the week. For the first time in school history the Niagara College men’s soccer program advanced to the second round of the OCAA Playoffs.

Despite being eliminated by the OCAA East Division leading Algonquin Thunder the Knights capped off the 2013 campaign with a strong effort, battling the weather and playing shorthanded. The Knights lost by a final score of 3-1.

The future looks bright for the Niagara College men’s soccer program. The team received strong performances from first year players Carlos Williams, Jordi Amores, Jordan Provenzano, and Jesse Derwinski, and the veteran leadership of William Janetos, Kyle Brooks, Austin MacDonell, Christian Carvajal, and Jon Sexton all combined to give the Knights their best season to date.

With all of the above players eligible to return next season, the future of the Niagara College men’s soccer program looks strong.

Reflecting on the 2013 campaign, Knights head coach Frank DeChellis commented “this season the college demonstrated they are fully behind the entire soccer program. It’s a healthy kind of pressure that moving forward will move us as a program to the next level. Our 2014 pre-season began on Sunday.”

Female Athlete of the Week - Kaitlyn McPherson

For the second consecutive week, Kaitlyn McPherson of the Niagara College women’s basketball program has been selected as the female athlete of the week. McPherson was selected as a tournament all-star at the annual Georgian College Fall Classic this past weekend.

The third-year forward is a student in the Niagara College Early Childhood Education program. The five-foot-ten graduate of Welland’s Confederation high school has been a key member of the Knights offense during the 2013-14 pre-season.

McPherson had an outstanding game against George Brown on Saturday, leading the Knights in both points (16) and rebounds (8).

McPherson and the rest of the Niagara College women’s basketball program will open their 2013-14 regular season this week as the team hosts a pair of matches on October 26th and 27th against the Sault College Cougars. Tip-off for Saturday’s game is set for 6:00pm and Saturday will get underway at 1:00pm.
