Delroy Grandison and Courtney McPherson Named SAC Athletes of the Week

Female Athlete of the Week – Courtney McPherson, Women’s Basketball

Courtney McPherson of the Niagara College women’s basketball program has been selected as this week’s SAC female athlete of the week. McPherson helped lead the Knights to a crucial 87-72 victory over the Redeemer Royals on December 4th.

McPherson is a native of Welland and a graduate of École secondaire Confédération. The five-foot-eleven forward is in her first year with the Niagara College women’s basketball program as is averaging a team leading 12.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, while shooting 47.7% from the floor.

During the Knights final game of 2014 against the Redeemer Royals the Early Childhood Education student finished with a season high 27 points on 11 of 14 shooting. McPherson also grabbed eight rebounds, and had three steals in just 27:00 minutes of playing time.

“Courtney really has an awesome game for us against Redeemer” said Niagara College women’s basketball head coach Mike Beccaria. “She has had a very strong start to her Knights career, and we are looking forward to seeing her develop in the years to come.”

McPherson and the rest of the Niagara College women’s basketball program enter the 2014 mid-season break with a record of 5-4. The team currently sits in fifth place in competitive OCAA West division.

Male Athlete of the Week – Delroy Grandison, Men’s Basketball

For the second time this season, Delroy Grandison of the Niagara College men’s basketball program has been selected as the SAC male athlete of the week. Grandison is averaging 13.4 points and a team high 7.6 rebounds per game this season.

During the Knights December 4th road loss to the Redeemer Royals, the six-foot-three forward turned in his second double-double of 2014, finishing with game highs in both points (24) and rebounds (12).

Grandison is in his first year with the Knights men’s basketball program and is currently enrolled in the Niagara College Welding Techniques program. He is a native of Kingston, Jamaica, and graduated from the Noble Preparatory Academy.

The Niagara College men’s basketball program will return to action on December 19th when the team hosts the first annual Niagara Knights Invitational basketball tournament at the Well Campus Athletic Centre.
