Marako Lundy and Courtney McPherson named athletes of the week

Female Athlete of the Week – Courtney McPherson, Women’s Basketball

For the second time this season, Courtney McPherson of the Niagara College women’s basketball program has been selected as this week’s SAC female athlete of the week.  McPherson helped lead the Knights to an impressive 76-56 victory over Redeemer on February 26.

McPherson is a native of Welland and a graduate of École secondaire Confédération.  The five-foot-eleven forward is in her first year with the Niagara College basketball program and is majoring in Early Childhood Education.

McPherson put on a dominant performance against Redeemer, recording her sixth double-double of the OCAA regular season.  She scored 32 points, a new career-high, while adding in 16 rebounds.  Before Friday’s game, McPherson was ranked ninth in the CCAA in rebounds, averaging 10.5 per game.

Up next for the Niagara College women’s basketball program will be back to back road games on February 14 against Lambton (6-10, 7th West) and February 15 against St. Clair (10-6, 4th West).

Male Athlete of the Week – Marako Lundy, Men’s Basketball

Marako Lundy of the Niagara College men’s basketball program has been selected as the SAC male athlete of the week.  With help from Lundy Friday night, the Knights were able to pull off the upset over the fifth place Redeemer Royals (9-6). 

Down late in the third against Redeemer, a pair of clutch three point conversions by Lundy proved to be the turning point as the Knights regained the lead with just over a minute remaining, eventually edging out a five point victory.

 Lundy, a six-foot-four forward from the Bahamas finished the game with a team-high 21 points, while adding seven rebounds and four steals.

The win keeps the Knights in the thick of the OCAA West division playoff race. The team now sits at 6-9 just two points behind the Sheridan Bruins for the final playoff spot with three games remaining.

Up next for the men’s basketball program will be a pair of tough road games on February 14 against Lambton (10-6, 4th West) and February 15 against St. Clair (6-10, 8th West).
