Cole Jordan and Alyssa McCabe named SAC athletes of the week

Female Athlete of the Week – Alyssa McCabe, Women’s Basketball

Alyssa McCabe of the Niagara College women’s basketball program has been selected as this week’s SAC female athlete of the week.  McCabe helped the Knights pull off the upset over the third seed Fanshawe Falcons on January 24.

McCabe is a native of Niagara Falls and a graduate of A.N. Myer Secondary School.  The five-foot-five point guard is in her second year with the Niagara College basketball program and is majoring as an Educational Assistant – Special Needs Support.

The former Niagara College female rookie of the year paced the way against Fanshawe, with head coach Mike Beccaria referring to McCabe as a “floor general”.  Alyssa filled the stat sheet, collecting nine points, eight assists, five rebounds, a block and a steal.  The win helped Niagara stop a two game losing streak and bring their record back to .500.

Up next for the women’s basketball program will be back to back home games on January 31 and February 1 against Cambrian College (1-12, 9th West).

Male Athlete of the Week – Cole Jordan, Men’s Volleyball

For the first time in his short career, Cole Jordan of the Niagara College men’s volleyball program has been selected as this week’s SAC male athlete of the week.  Jordan helped lead the Knights to a straight set sweep over the Fanshawe Falcons on January 22.

After recording back-to-back games scoring in double figures, the London native has begun to show the OCAA what he is capable of.  “He is a physical player who does some things offensively that not many guys are capable of, at a very high efficiency,” said head coach Nathan Groenveld. The six-foot-four outside hitter has recorded 20 kills on only 36 swings over his last two contests.

The general business major will be looking to keep the hot streak going this weekend, as the Knights face Cambrian (3-10, 8th West) on January 31 and Boreal (0-12, 10th West) February 1.
