Fred Bassi

Fred Bassi of Welland Ontario was the most successful coach in Niagara College history. The Boston University Hockey Hall of Famer began his coaching career at Niagara College in 1970 when he was hired as a faculty member in the Athletic Department and Head Coach of the Niagara Hockey Knights. In those thirty years Fred won the respect of thousands of students, athletes and staff on and off the field of play.

As Head Coach of the Knights for the next twenty-four years, he guided the knights to five Gold Medal International Collegiate Hockey League championships, four Silver, five Bronze and one OCAA (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) Silver Medal. Fred was voted ICHL Coach of the Year three times. He served as president for six years and OCAA Hockey Governor for two years.

Fred also guided the Mixed Doubles Tennis Team to an OCAA Gold Medal in 1974. He was the Head Coach of the Tennis from 1972-1980, Touch Football 1979-1982 and Cross Country in 1979-1980. His most memorable moment was getting hired by Niagara College. He would not trade his thirty years at Niagara College for anything.
